How do you track your spending?

There's a lot of ways to track your spending. Most of my spending is tracked through using my debit card. I then import my bank statements into Budgety. I'm curious as to how other people track their spending?

Do you keep dozens of receipts in your wallet? Track via the iPhone App? Text Messaging?

I run a network marketing business alongside my job so keeping a budget A-N-D tracking my income and expenses for Income Tax purposes is extremely important to me.

When I spend, I use my debit/credit card so that I can import my statements into a tracking system like Budgety. Then I assign each expense a category and I have to be able to run reports monthly (for budgeting purposes) and yearly (for income tax purposes) to show expenses for each category.

Additionally, there are certain expense categories that the IRS recognizes as legitimate tax deductions so I have to be able to track those separately from my personal, non-deductible expenses.

Unfortunately, Budgety doesn't support running reports at this point. However, if you go to the Transactions tab, you can easily export all of your transactions by clicking one of the links on the bottom left.

Once you have your transactions exported, you should be able to run reports based on them in Excel or a similar tool.

I try to keep as much spending as possible on my debit card, I then make a note of any cash transactions on my phone (or keep the receipt).

I am going to see how I get on with the mobile version of Budgety, this will save the duplicated data-entry.
